A 1300 sq ft house plan that proves small modern house plans don't have to feel small. This Japandi home plan has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. A small house plan can still feel grand.
American rural countryside calm meets Japanese zen. The house features clean lines and wood accents inside.
A Large Modern Cabin's Twin
This plan is our popular 2-Bedroom Large Modern Cabin — just smaller. Builders constructed that cabin across more than five states, and people loved the layout, and the builder loved its simple construction.
Yet, we received many requests to see if there is a smaller one. Chloe came back from her trip to Japan. She feels inspired to bring some Zen and Japanese architecture concepts into this popular cabin house plan.
A 1-story house plan designed around real life
The primary suite and the guest bedroom are at opposite ends of the house. So, “I can hear everything” is no longer part of hosting.
The primary bath keeps things compact and calm with a standard tub.
The primary bedroom features a walk-in closet with a gallery layout. The most efficient layout for closet space. The guest bedroom has a built-in wall closet and feels compact.
The middle is the heart: an open-plan living and dining area that punches well above its footprint. This compact house still hosts a surprisingly large party.
The ceiling is a pitched, cathedral roof. It has wood siding above. Wooden faux beams decorate it. This creates rhythm in the larger open space.
The L-shaped kitchen is anchored by a center island and a built-in wall cabinet. Right behind the kitchen is a large pantry for all storage needs. the kitchen cabinet with a wood-veneer texture, and all the cabinetry built in to match it. It creates a Japandi zen feeling immediately.
A mudroom entry means the muddy dog has somewhere to be muddy that isn't your living room. Planning ahead? That same end allows you to add a garage later on the side of the house.
With everything you need in a 1-story house plan layout.
A private deck, built for the hot tub you've been promising yourself. On the south side of the house — right off the primary bedroom — we designed a deck with a hot tub in mind, so a soak is a few barefoot steps from bed instead of a whole expedition. It's the sunny side too, which means long afternoons of light and the kind of evening steam that makes the wood accents glow. Out front of the large slider, a low landscape garden softens the edge between indoors and out, so when the doors are open the living space and the greenery read as one calm, connected room.
Minimalist house plans that live large.
If you've been hunting for minimalist house plans that feel warm instead of stark, this is it. Whether you want a simple, one-story main home or a minimalist weekend cabin, this 2-bedroom house plan feels spacious.
We design a house to live in, not an object we must constantly upkeep. One floor, no stairs, and plenty of warmth. Minimalist house plans can be cozy, not cold, as this proves. I am immensely proud to hear when our customers and clients say the house is easy to clean.
This home is designed to feel calm, with compact square footage. A good vacation home where you want to escape city life and the noise.

Both. The single-story, 2-bed, 2-bath layout works as an easy full-time home or a low-maintenance getaway.
What makes this different from other minimalist house plans?
The Japandi style blends warm wood accents with zen simplicity. These minimalist house plans feel calm and inviting, not bare.
Can I add a garage later?
Yes — we intentionally designed the mudroom end so you can naturally add a garage in the future.
